There are both good and bad sides to longevity. With the more people on the earth there could be more trash and pollution as seen in the Disney movie Wall-E. And the increase of fertility that could be needed if bombs are used to destroy the world leaving few survivors like in the book By The Waters of Babylon. And the military uses could help in the fight against terrorism.

Medical technology is an advancement technology. In A Sound of Thunder, the technology is so far advanced that people are able to travel back into the past for a fee of 10,000 dollars. Longevity treatments can cost anywhere from 10,000 to 30,000 dollars. Pills and supplements show the evolution of science and medical technology.
Vitamins and supplements can provide the nutrients that aren't obtained from eating food. Little changes in life can have big consequences, which is the theme in A Sound of Thunder, whether they are for better or for worse; changes in technology can have benefits for the users, or can have disadvantages. Disadvantages include not enough resources, not enough space for all the people, and quarrels between science and religion. Advantages include longer lives, better working extremities, and happy existences for humans.

The modern issues of longevity, the knowledge and, in turn, power that comes with it, have been explored in works of the past. Particularly, the consequences of having too much information and technological advancement can be seen in the story, “By the Waters of Babylon” . In the story, the protagonist, John, finds information about the fall of his ancestors’ society which would cause outrage if it were spread to the common people who idolized the ancestors as gods. The information and use of longevity treatments could have similar effects on our society. Whether it be for religious, economic, or ethical reasons people may deny this evolution in medicinal science because it would go against their beliefs. The science is new and different, but people are afraid of change. It’s possible that only hunky grandpas can help convince the non-believers now.

Scott Pasquale The science of longevity relates entirely to the progress of technology. Technology allows people to observe people and change people’s DNA. This could also be used to completely destroy humanity if not thought out carefully. The relates to By the Waters of Babylon because John is exploring a city which has been destroyed by humanity’s careless progression of technology. Technology destroyed the people in the story and the science of longevity can do just the same.
